The Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) government is on shaky ground after 16 legislators resigned from their positions and 2 more pulled their support. HD Kumaraswamy has moved the Trust Motion because he believes the party can win the test of strength.
The BJP has been pushing for the floor test and has expressed confidence that they have the numbers.
The ruling coalition’s strength in the 224-member assembly was 118 before the members resigned. With the support of the two independents, the opposition BJP has 107 legislators. If the resignations of the 15 legislators who approached the Supreme Court are accepted, Kumaraswamy’s party will plummet to 101.
The Supreme Court has left it to the Speaker to decide on the resignations and told the party that it cannot force the members to join the assembly as it blunts the threat of disqualification.
